Patient e-rickshaw – Frugal Innovation

Electric and smart mobility is the future. The world is transforming and environment has become a major concern all over.

Healthcare is also gearing up along. Electric ambulances are on way. This will not only be a contribution to environment but to cost of pre-hospital care too. Saving life is more important than saving 20% cost by using private vehicles instead of an ambulance. This is where EV Ambulances come into play. Since the cost of paramedics and medical equipment remain constant, the cost of transportation becomes much cheaper with EVs and this increases the usability of ambulances.

We designed a patient e-rickshaw – everyone called in e-ambulance for rural India. The idea was to carry sick and debilitated patients, with only one or no care giver and yet had to visit clinics, hospitals, and nursing homes.  For a clinic visit one can not take an ambulance ride at ₹ 1500. Added to it the time of consultation remains vague, then from clinic patients are referred to diagnostic centres, back with reports to clinic and then to home. One medical consultation for a rural patient visiting a town takes at least 8-10 hours and some times 2 – 4 days. There are several to & fro and transport systems are not patient friendly.

We did a frugal innovation in 2019 at a small district at Begusarai and its still functioning there, at Khagaria and Samastipur.

Later I also realised that at large medical institutions like IGIMS Patna, AIIMS and likes, patients get transfer from one ward to other in different buildings and inter hospital transfer also need solution other than pulling stretchers!

The e-rickshaw ambulances also did wonders at Patna during covid and became talk of town and attracted lot of media attention then. We could not scale it at that point of time because it needed a huge capital. We were committed to improvise the EMS in India and did the most essential things within our capacity.

Hanuman is young but team is full of innovative ideas, understanding the ground realities and frugal in designs.
